Gough and Araki cruise to Australian Master of the Amateurs titles

John Gough and Yuna Araki cruise to Australian Master of the Amateurs titles. Gough fired a 4-under 68 in his final round to finish at 15-under 273 and earn a four-stroke victory over Gregor Tait of Scotland. Araki carded a final round 71 (-2) to complete a wire-to-wire title run. It was Gough’s fifth win on three continents in less than three years. He is also the first Englishman to win the coveted green jacket. Chi Chun Chen of Chinese Taipei finished third at 10-under 278 while Nick Gabrelcik, who plays collegiately at North Florida, finished fourth at 7-under 281. The tournament was held at Southern Golf Club in Melbourne. It is Australia’s premier amateur event and is run by the Australian Golf Association. The winner of the tournament receives a $10,000 prize fund and a $5,000 cash award. The event is open to men and women from all over Australia and New Zealand. It takes place over four days and is held at a course in Melbourne’s suburb of Fitzroy. The first round of the event was held on Tuesday with a course record of 67 (-6) set by Gough. The second round was played on Wednesday with a record of 64 (-3) by Araki. The final round was held Thursday with a score of 12-under 280 (67-74-68-71) to earn a six-shot victory over countrywoman Mamika Shinchi.
